Recent opinion pieces demonstrate the airlines' strong environmental record and unwavering commitment to further reducing the industry's environmental footprint. "[O]ne fact is already clear: the aviation sector is demonstrating strong leadership in taking responsibility for reducing emissions and conserving energy," House Aviation Subcommittee Chairman Jerry Costello, D-Ill., said in a column. Costello said Congress has a role to play, including funding airspace modernization and research initiatives. Airbus CEO Tom Enders agrees. "We are absolutely convinced that the solution [to reducing aircraft emissions] is not new taxes, new constraints, but technology and innovation," Enders said. Enders said such innovation has already made large commercial aircraft about 70% more efficient than they were 30 years ago.
