Carriers ponder turn toward Skype, VoIP

The launch of Skype's VoIP service over the iPhone and BlackBerry platforms has brought to a head the issue of what role wireless carriers will play in the future and how they can continue to branch their businesses out beyond selling voice services. Industry executives note that mobile operators have struggled to update their business models under IP-based technologies -- such as 4G network service -- and Skype's emergence has brought new urgency to the issue.
