Column: Well-intended product-safety laws in Oregon may hurt state

The slew of product-safety laws being considered in the Oregon Legislature are out of line with the rest of the nation and could harm the state's manufacturing and retail base while eliminating products that keep residents safe, writes Betsy Earls, vice president and counsel of Associated Oregon Industries. Proposed laws to ban bisphenol A and phthalates, though well-intentioned, place emotion over science, and in the case of phthalates, safety standards already have been set at the federal level, she writes.
