A little fresh air never hurt anyone -- including computers. U.S. and Canadian businesses can check out a free online tool from The Green Grid, a group of 208 companies with huge data centers, to learn how how much fresh air could reduce their air-conditioning bill. "Until recently, energy has been cheap, so building designers had gotten complacent in terms of energy management in a facility's cooling systems," says Mark Monroe, Sun Microsystems' director of sustainable computing.
