Russia lends weight to targeted sanctions

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said that Russia would support imposing sanctions against Iran as soon as this spring after he and U.S. President Barack Obama held private discussions at a signing ceremony for a historic nuclear arms reduction treaty in Prague. Veto-holding UN Security Council permanent member China has expressed reluctance over the sanctions, while UN Security Council member states Brazil and Turkey have also said they do not support the sanctions proposal. According to officials, Medvedev insisted on targeted sanctions that would not impose new hardships on Iran.
