Post-adenotonsillectomy analgesia with opioids that use the CYP2D6 pathway may be unsafe in young children with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, according to a case study in the journal Pediatrics. Functional gene duplications encoding for CYP2D6 caused significantly higher production of morphine from codeine administered after surgery in two fatal cases, the researchers reported.
