AAHPM: U.S. short 18,000 palliative care, hospice physicians

The American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine said the U.S. faces a shortage of 18,000 palliative and hospice physicians. AAHPM executive VP Dr. Porter Storey said issues include lower pay compared with other specialists, and a slow process for certifying physicians. He said federal legislation AAHPM helped write focuses on increased physician training and grants to physicians who enter the subspecialty to teach or practice.
