Canary Wharf: Once the world's largest commercial development

"It really took 20 years for Canary Wharf to become an overnight success," says Sir George Iacobescu, CEO of England's Canary Wharf Group. The massive redevelopment project in London's East End -- "the then largest single commercial development in the world" -- started in 1987 with Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher's determination to make it happen. It also took more than $3 billion to create its infrastructure. The place today is home to 100,000 jobs.
