"It really took 20 years for Canary Wharf to become an overnight success," says Sir George Iacobescu, CEO of England's Canary Wharf Group. The massive redevelopment project in London's East End -- "the then largest single commercial development in the world" -- started in 1987 with Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher's determination to make it happen. It also took more than $3 billion to create its infrastructure. The place today is home to 100,000 jobs.
