Mo. project to maintain floodway's connection to Mississippi River

The St. Johns Bayou and New Madrid Floodway Project in Missouri is designed to keep the floodway linked to the Mississippi River and allow seasonal flooding, according to the Army Corps of Engineers. Tyrone Coleman, mayor of Cairo, Ill., said he has "great concern and anxiety" over how the project could hinder the levee system. A draft of an environmental-impact statement for the project that is expected during the spring is aimed at allaying local concerns, said Maj. Gen. John Peabody of the Corps of Engineers and the Mississippi River Commission.
