New science standards call for deeper thinking, fewer topics

The Next Generation Science Standards released Tuesday -- developed by a coalition of science and teaching groups -- include fewer topics with a greater focus on engineering, critical thinking and demonstrations of ideas, and less emphasis on rote memorization. The standards also include a focus on the evolution of humans and draws a connection between climate change and human activity -- language that is expected to spark controversy.
