To achieve a lush, healthy lawn by summer, treat the grass with a pre-emergent herbicide and preventative fungicide, said Bill Hayes, a member of the Aiken Master Gardener Association in Aiken, S.C. Sharpen lawn mower blades to prevent them from tearing grass, and check the irrigation system to ensure that it distributes water evenly, Hayes said.
