Study: Protein may help protect gut in celiac disease patients

A study suggests the protein elafin may help reduce the inflammatory reaction of celiac disease, researchers reported in The American Journal of Gastroenterology. According to the report, earlier research showed elafin may protect the gut against CD-related inflammation but is less abundant in celiac patients compared with healthy individuals. The observation led researchers to create a probiotic bacterium to use as a vehicle to deliver elafin to the guts of mice, which resulted in a significant reduction in inflammatory reaction.
