Serono withdraws sale offer, to acquire others instead

The Bertarelli family considered all of the bids for its biotech company Serono too low to entertain, so it has withdrawn its search for a buyer and plans to expand instead by acquiring other firms. Serono, already Europe's largest biotech, is "able to execute a transaction relatively quickly," its chief financial officer said.
