Alaska Airlines president on competition, expansion and volcanoes

In an interview with The Oregonian newspaper, Alaska Airlines President Brad Tilden addresses questions of airline fees, environmental efforts and international expansion. Tilden says his carrier operates a sort of hybrid hub-and-spoke/point-to-point model, and that flights to or within Alaska represent a quarter of the airline's business. Tilden also says he's unconcerned with recent volcanic eruptions that cost the airline millions because of canceled flights. "We have $1 billion in cash on hand, which is way higher than other airlines," he said. "We try to build a very rugged company for those kinds of events."
