Editorial: Gates gets "A" for effort on budget

The Wall Street Journal gives Defense Secretary Robert Gates "an A for optimistic effort" on Pentagon budget reforms, "even if we have our disagreements with some of his strategic choices." The paper warns against Clinton-style budget slashing, when defense spending fell from 5% to just 3% of GDP. Cuts to missile defenses, shipbuilding and the F-22 fighter are especially troubling, according to the Journal's editorial board.
