Roof becomes classroom for tradespeople

In exchange for on-the-job training, volunteer workers installed 30 solar panels on the Town Hall roof in Merrillville, Ind. Traditionally home to steel mills, northwest Indiana soon will welcome greener industries. The state will receive $163 million in stimulus funds to retrofit federal buildings to energy-efficient standards -- which can include solar and wind power. But traditional tradespeople need to learn how to work with the newer materials.
