Pay-as-you-go home-improvement trend pays off for retailers

More consumers are opting to fix up their homes as their finances allow rather than going into more debt to buy fancier digs, a trend that's starting to pay off for recession-battered home improvement chains. Hiring is up at both Lowe's and Home Depot, which recently reported its first sales increase since 2006, and regional chain Menard plans to open 12 new stores in 2011, up from four last year.
