Decades of successive governments of Bangladesh, working in tandem with development organizations, have done a great deal -- in part through microlending, and lately through the growing garment industry -- to improve the lives of women nationwide, notably through expanded access to health care and basic education. The progress would be unthinkable in many other Muslim societies.
