Demolish and rebuild skyscrapers, or retrofit them?

A study by consulting firm Terrapin Bright Green suggests that demolishing old skyscrapers and replacing them with larger, more efficient ones could be "the best means of shoring up the sustainability and environmental friendliness of urban areas." However, the study is contrary to what Preservation Green Lab of the National Building Trust for Historic Preservation found last year when it reported that retrofitting a building would achieve greater energy efficiency than replacing it.
