Facebook: WhatsApp acquisition OK'd but with a privacy warning

The Federal Trade Commission cleared the way for Facebook to proceed with its $19 billion acquisition of WhatsApp with a caveat: WhatsApp must maintain its existing privacy practices once the purchase is completed. "If the acquisition is completed and WhatsApp fails to honor these promises, both companies could be in violation of Section 5 of the Federal Trade Commission Act and, potentially, the FTC's order against Facebook," Jessica Rich, director of the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection, wrote in a letter to the companies. Facebook and WhatsApp still must obtain approval for the deal from European regulators.
