FDA hears arguments on silicone-gel breast implants

The Food and Drug Administration opens a three-day meeting on Monday to hear arguments on whether to continue a ban on silicone-gel breast implants that have been in place for 13 years. Manufacturers Inamed and Mentor corporations are expected to try to prove that their silicone products are safe enough to re-enter the U.S. market, but preliminary analyses released last week indicated FDA scientists did not think the evidence was sufficient.
