Federal programs, ACC mandate promote safety at chemical facilities

Despite fears that chemical facilities in Houston are vulnerable to terrorist attacks, the sites are getting safer as chemical companies have invested more than $8 billion on security enhancements under the American Chemistry Council's Responsible Care Security Code, said Bill Erny, the ACC's senior security director. Federal programs such as the Maritime Transportation Security Act and the Chemical Facility Anti-Terrorism Standards are also enforced to promote greater security at chemical sites, Erny writes in this letter to the editor.
