FDA releases new antibiotic restrictions, prescription requirement

The FDA on Wednesday said ranchers and farmers will need a prescription from a veterinarian before they can use antibiotics in food animals. AVMA supports the move, though Dr. Christine Hoang noted it could detrimentally affect very small or isolated producers due to the shortage of large-animal veterinarians. The directive is part of a larger set of issued guidance, portions of which are open for public comment.
