GIS technology is playing a major role in several studies looking at how where children live affects their risk for obesity. Researchers concluded that rural youths ate more fast food in areas where it was available than their urban counterparts did. "[GIS] offers an important means of better understanding and dealing with some of the most pressing problems of our time and provides valuable tools for researchers and policymakers alike," said researcher Stephen A. Matthews.
