Study: Diffusion MRI detects patterns formed by nerve cells

Nerve fibers found in the brains of four primates, as well as human test subjects, create a geometrical pattern that looks like a 3D grid, according to research in the journal Science conducted by Dr. Van Wedeen and colleagues. The study uses diffusion spectrum magnetic resonance imaging to assist researchers in understanding brain development and disorders such as Alzheimer's disease.
