USB 3.0 support is double-edged sword in controller chip market

Intel's support of USB 3.0 in chipsets that will accompany its forthcoming "Ivy Bridge" Core processors presents both an opportunity and a challenge for designers of USB 3.0 host controller chips, according to this posting. Renesas Electronics currently leads the market for USB 3.0 host controllers, yet the Intel chipsets could dampen demand for those ICs. Some Taiwanese designers are addressing the market for USB 3.0 bridge controllers, used with computer peripherals, as an alternative, DigiTimes reports, citing industry observers.
