NASA: Expect more solar flares as sun's cycle reaches its peak

NASA experts say a huge solar flare this week that caused a brief radio blackout was likely the strongest so far this year. "Increased numbers of flares are quite common at the moment, since the sun's normal 11-year cycle is ramping up toward solar maximum, which is expected in late 2013," said NASA spokeswoman Karen Fox.
