What is the effect of standardized testing?

Ron Berler, a journalist and author of "Raising the Curve: A Year Inside One of America's 45,000* Failing Public Schools," says that standardized testing is bad for students and is taking its toll on school curricula. In this interview, he suggests a reduction in standardized testing and a greater investment in elementary-school and early-childhood education, as well as increased parental involvement.
