New type of porous silicon seen as promising source of hydrogen via sunlight

Using a new method that builds up rather than removing material, researchers at Pennsylvania State University have produced a porous silicon that generates hydrogen from water. With its high surface area, "[t]his porous silicon can generate a good amount of hydrogen just from sunlight," said Donghai Wang, assistant professor of mechanical engineering at the school. Potential uses include batteries, biosensors and optical electronics.
