About 85% of hepatitis C patients develop chronic liver infection, but illness may not appear until 10 to 20 years after infection. Of these, about 20% of patients develop liver cirrhosis and up to 4% get liver cancer. Ribavirin and peginterferon both control symptoms of HCV but have varying side effects.
