Column: Pilots, passengers say general aviation safe

Passengers on small private planes are more likely to die than passengers on commercial planes, writes columnist Mary McCarty. However, general aviation pilots and passengers say flying is safer than driving. Vicky Hesler, the wife of Ohio pilot Terry Hesler, said "once you're in the air, there are far fewer opportunities for an accident to happen and there are far fewer risks if you're careful."
