U.S. launches study comparing oil, gas royalties with other countries

The Interior Department said it is studying whether royalties that companies pay to operate on federal properties are lower than those of other countries. U.S. royalty rates stand at 12.5% for onshore federal leases and as much as 18.75% for offshore leases. "We need to consider international comparisons in selecting fiscal parameters for our leases," Minerals Management Service Director Liz Birnbaum said.
