Most people lose an average of 50 to 100 hairs a day, but abnormal hair loss may be a sign of a serious condition and should be evaluated by a dermatologist, Dr. Francesca Fusco said. Medications, stress and genetics can cause greater-than-normal hair loss. More serious causes of hair loss include hypo- or hyperthyroidism, certain autoimmune disorders, iron deficiency anemia, polycystic ovarian syndrome, psoriasis, fungal infections and dermatitis. A dermatologist can diagnose the cause of unusual hair loss and develop a treatment plan.
