How the federal spending bill will affect education

Details released Tuesday on a plan to fund the federal government through September show that many cuts to education programs introduced in stop-gap budget measures will stand, including the elimination of direct funding for the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, Teach for America and the National Writing Project. However, the bill creates a new competitive grant program that gives those organizations the opportunity to apply for about $30 million in funding. Lawmakers are expected to vote on the measure this week.
