Labor Department takes a hit in federal budget compromise

The federal budget cuts agreed to by legislators last week will slash $19.8 billion from the Departments of Labor, Education and Health and Human Services, leading the ranking Democrat on the House Education and the Workforce Committee to say in a statement that he "had concerns" about the budget. Some officials say, however, that many of the cuts are not as bad as they seem, as they rely on accounting tricks such as eliminating money that wasn't scheduled to be spent this year.
