London Olympics misses sustainability goals

The London Olympics had hoped to reduce its carbon footprint by 50%. It made it to 40%, although an offset payment will help it reach the equivalent of the initial target. Only 9% of its energy needs will come from renewable energy -- far short of the 20% target. "Whilst there is still much to do, we are currently confident that London 2012 is on track to deliver unprecedented levels of sustainability," said Shaun McCarthy, chairman of the Commission for Sustainable London.
