New Orleans charter group adopts merit pay for teachers

A New Orleans charter network with four schools will remove educators from the state payroll -- which has been subject to pay freezes -- and begin paying teachers directly and using merit pay. School officials say the new pay system will take into account students' test scores as well as teacher attendance rates and participation in professional development. They also say the incentive-pay system will reward teachers who produce better results and keep them from being lured away by higher salaries.
