White roof wins over green at City Hall in Grand Rapids, Mich.

A reflective roof has been chosen for the Grand Rapids City Hall in Michigan instead of a green one as the city seeks to cut costs. The installation of a vegetated roof would require structural changes that would inflate the cost of the project, according to Haris Alibasic, director of the city’s office of energy and sustainability. The installation of the white roof is expected to be completed in August.
