It is infeasible to designate the Yucca Mountain repository in Nevada as a repository site for used nuclear fuel given the politics surrounding the site, said Peter Lyons, assistant secretary of nuclear energy with the Department of Energy. Lyons said lawmakers working on a comprehensive bill for used-fuel management might encounter difficulties along the way. "I want to see progress. And in my view, I don't believe we will see that progress if we continue to force Yucca Mountain on Nevada," he said.
