Competition stiff for applicants to top colleges

College competition has grown increasingly tough, with the most selective universities rejecting more than 90% of applicants, including some with almost-perfect GPAs, many AP courses and strong SAT scores. While less selective colleges are much more forgiving, top high-school students routinely pile on demanding classes, extracurricular activities and SAT-preparation courses in the hope of getting accepted at top schools.
