Diabetics sacrificing health care amid recession

An Associated Press analysis found that diabetics are cutting back on or going without medications, medical visits and blood-sugar testing because of the recession and job or health insurance losses. Interviews with health care providers showed diabetic patients are not coming in for regular checkups and more often seek charity care or end up in hospital emergency rooms. Sales of diabetes medications and products have dropped since last fall, and more patients are opting for less expensive insulin injections over pills to save money.
