Stimulus package does little to ease construction unemployment in Ariz.

Highway projects funded by the federal economic-stimulus package will create about 6,020 construction jobs in Arizona. That doesn't come close to compensating for the 77,000 construction jobs lost in the state between January 2007 and January 2009. Observers note that about 33% of the state's construction workers do not have jobs -- the highest rate of unemployed construction workers in the U.S. "We're not looking a gift horse in the mouth. All of something is better than all of nothing," noted David Martin, president of the Arizona chapter of the Associated General Contractors. "But there is far more need than what the stimulus package will underwrite."
