Safeway has been named America's top sustainable-seafood retailer in a Greenpeace ranking, earning praise for discontinuing sales of endangered "red list" species. The ranking shows across-the-board improvements among U.S. retailers: three years ago, all of the retailers studied flunked Greenpeace's eco-test, but this year, 15 of them won a passing grade. "Retailers are largely responding to sustainability because it's a reality that's getting more and more difficult to ignore. ... the vast majority are doing something," says Greenpeace's Casson Trenor.
