California court rules employers don't have to "police" breaks

The California Supreme Court has ruled unanimously that employers do not have to monitor workers to make sure they're taking rest or lunch breaks as required by state law. Workers' attorneys had argued there were widespread violations of the law. Associate Justice Kathryn Werdegar wrote that employees can use the time off however they want, and that an employer "is not obligated to police meal breaks and ensure no work thereafter is performed."
