Spending on higher-priced items rises as "frugality fatigue" sets in

Americans are starting to loosen the purse strings when it comes to discretionary items, experts say, suggesting that they are weary of watching every penny. Frugality fatigue is setting in, said Russell Price, senior economist at Ameriprise Financial in Detroit, and as consumers' prospects improve, "some pent-up demand is being released." The uptick in spending is even visible in lower-priced sectors: Dunkin' Donuts has seen people choosing a "better level of sandwich," Dunkin' Brands CEO Nigel Travis said.
