USGS report links wastewater injection to earthquakes

Drilling-wastewater-injection activities could be the cause of a series of earthquakes in the middle of the U.S., according to a study from the U.S. Geological Survey. "Our scientists cite a series of examples for which an uptick in seismic activity is observed in areas where the disposal of wastewater through deep-well injection increased significantly," said Deputy Interior Secretary David Hayes. The temblors, however, hardly caused damage, he said.
