Medicare officials urged to standardize drug discount card enrollment

Senior citizens advocacy groups and state officials are asking Medicare to automatically enroll beneficiaries in a drug discount card program and standardize enrollment so that those eligible choose a card program appropriate to their needs. The groups contend that the current structure of the drug discount card program is unnecessarily confusing for many beneficiaries, but Dr. Mark McClellan, administrator of the Medicare program, said participation is voluntary and the law as written requires beneficiaries to opt in to a particular card program.
