In New Orleans, 12 middle schools to be merged with elementary schools

A Louisiana board of education committee has approved the New Orleans district's plan to phase out a dozen poorly-performing middle schools over the next three years by converting their feeder elementary schools to K-8 campuses. Supporters of Superintendent Tony Amato's proposal say that the expanded elementary schools will provide a more nurturing environment to young adolescents.
