"Cataloging error" led to "Amazonfail" controversy

More than 57,000 titles, including what some allege were a disproportionate number of gay and lesbian titles, mistakenly were pulled from Amazon.com's sales listings and were more difficult to locate on its internal search engine. The online retailer, which by Monday afternoon had begun restoring some of the titles to the sales rankings, blamed the problem on "an embarrassing and ham-fisted cataloging error." The situation was widely publicized by posts on Twitter and other blogs.
