Most Asian markets gain as Japan continues to slide

Trading in Australia and Hong Kong resumed Tuesday as most Asian markets advanced on gains in the financial sector. Automakers were hit by profit-taking to drag down the Japanese index, with the Nikkei 225 giving up 0.9%. Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index soared 4.6%, while Australia's S&P/ASX 200 rose 2.2%. New Zealand's NZX 50 climbed 1.1%, South Korea's Kospi inched up 0.3% and Taiwan's Taiex climbed 0.5%. Markets in India and Thailand were closed for holidays.
